Detroit Half Marathon 2010

Yesterday, I completed my first half marathon (21.6KM).  I’ve accomplished a few milestones this year since I have decided to start running, but yesterday has surpassed any feeling of accomplishment I have achieved this year.  I started running last August, but stopped after only two months.  This year at the end of February, I decided to get back into running and setting goals for myself.  First being running a 5K race, then running 100KM total in one month.  So signing up for a half marathon seemed like a hefty goal for me at the end of June.  I started training very hard in July for the race, but pushed myself too hard to the point of injury.  July and August were hard months as I couldn’t run due to the pain.  Time really seemed like it was running out, and I started having doubts if I could complete the run in Detroit.

Completing the race, was truly a moment that i will remember for the rest of my life. Below is the map of my run:

I finished with an official chip time of 2:37:39

For sure, I will be going back to run next year. It truly was an amazing site running across Ambassador Bridge when the sun was rising.

100KM in June

After finishing my first 5K race on May 2nd, I wasn’t so diligent about finding the time to keep my running up.  In May, I ran less than half of the distance that I covered in April.

I was pretty disappointed in myself for not finding the time or having the same focus as I committed to running in April, so I set a goal for myself to run 100KM in the month of June.

Running 100K in a month would mean that naturally, I would have to increase my distance for every run.  Previous to the month of June, the longest distance that I ran was 5.75KM.

The first Run, I aimed for a goal of 6K, then pushed it to 8K.  On June 30th, I was able to complete a 12K run!!

It’s interesting because I look back on how I felt when I started the Couch to 5K program, struggling to complete 60 seconds of running.  5K seemed like such a long distance, 10K seemed impossible.  The day that I completed the 12K run to reach the mark of 102Km in June, I felt such a huge sense of accomplishment.

Moving forward, I have signed up for the 2010 Detroit Half Marathon (21K) in October.  It is a lofty goal, but I have 3 months to train for it.

Back on the Fitness wagon. C25K W1

It’s been 4 months since I have posted a fitness related activity. I haven’t really done anything fitness related and fell back into old habits. At the peak of my fitness activities back in October, I was one run short of finishing W4 of the Couch to 5K program. and was down to 180lbs. Fast forward 4 months. I am back up to 195lbs, and once again, not eating properly.

I’ve decided to start the C25K program again (for the third time) and this time run it to completion. To ensure that, I have set myself a goal and signed up for the Forest City Road Road Race (5K) on May 2nd.

This time around, I have a couple of new things in my arsenal.

Due to the winter weather, and that I will be running in the snow, I received a pair of traction aids for my shoes over the holidays from my wife.

I also purchased the internet scale from Withings.  A geeky purchase, but will allow me to track my progress.  It works with RunKeeper and Weightbot for my iPhone.  Withings also allows some great API access that I plan on using in the near future.

Week 1 Breakdown:

Starting weight: 195.0 lbs
Ending weight: 192.4 lbs
KMs run: 11.3KM

C25K – W1D1

C25K – W1D2

C25K – W1D3

Taking 4 weeks off has truly brought me back to Week 1. I found myself getting winded in the 60 second running portions. A far way off running 5 mins straight that I was doing last October.
